Chapter 14

Cam had just come in from the yard. It was a miserable Maryland day at the end of the summer. The temperature was over ninety degrees with humidity around ninety percent. The dampness off Chesapeake Bay permeated the air and made it heavy. Moving was an effort. Even breathing caused everyone to sweat.

Despite the heat, Cam felt a small amount of self-satisfaction. Today, in the yard, she’d been with a group of women standing close to the far wall when someone produced a small amount of cocaine. Unlike other days when she’d been shielded from any transaction like that, she’d watched as three of the women had inhaled the powdery white stuff. And they’d known she was there, too. They hadn’t even tried to hide it from her. Maybe they were beginning to trust her, or at least had grown tired of being careful around her.

Cam stepped into the bathroom next to the shower room. She ran her hand under the faucet and splashed her face, allowing the tepid water to run down her chest.

Cam was suddenly aware of someone behind her. She turned around, wiping her face with her sleeve. Three women stood blocking the door. Except for them, the shower room was empty.

The tallest of the three entered the room, slowly striding, studying Cam as she circled her, nodding her head.

“You sure look a lot smaller without that badge,” Lacey said.

Cam didn’t move, but every muscle tensed. She’d been waiting since her first day here, since they’d locked eyes in the cafeteria, for Lacey to make some move toward her. She’d almost begun to hope that Lacey hadn’t recognized her but knew that was too much to wish for.

“Roni, did I tell you what a Wonder Woman we got here?” Lacey called back to one of her two friends without taking her eyes off Cam. “Super Cop. Busted five people in one night! All by herself. Not bad for a white girl. Of course, she had to kill one and maim another.” She stopped, assessing Cam. Then she spoke. “You like arresting people? Liked it so much you decided to arrest yourself!” She threw her head back and laughed. The sound rumbled all the way from the bottom of her belly. “Or d’you like shootin’ them better?”

Cam shifted her weight to a more relaxed-looking stance but was still ready to move. This was obviously a situation she didn’t want to come up on the short end of. Allowing Ruth to slug her was one thing, this could be something entirely different.

Lacey glared at Cam. “This bitch,” and she emphasized the word, “shot my sister. Busted her leg so bad, she’ll never walk right again. Shot clear through the bone.”

Cam didn’t lower her eyes from Lacey’s face but she remembered. Remembered a young girl running down the alley, ignoring their shouts to halt, turning, raising her hands, a gun pointed straight at her and Russ. Cam had brought her own gun up and fired, intentionally aiming low. She’d
